%X In large areas, such as Brazil, monitoring of forest fires using satellite images is the most efficient and cheap from the detection methods. The aim of this study was verify the efficiency of spectral indices NDVI and NDBR in the identification and mapping of burnt areas from 2008 to 2011 in the Grão Mogol State Park (PEGM), in north of Minas Gerais State. For this, we used the Landsat-5 satellite images, TM sensor, referring to the orbit/point 218/71 of the years 2008 to 2011. The NDVI and NDBR were generated, as well as the images difference between the rates corresponding the previous scene and the later scene to the fire event. In addition, it recorded the relative difference (%) of the indices in relation to actual data, and performed Tukey test to check the differences between spectral indices. There was no change in landscape considered the years 2008, 2009 and 2010 in relation to the identification of burned areas. Standardised a distance of 15 to 30 days to the date of the post-burned image, it was found that the pixel values able to better distinguish the burned areas of the remaining was from 0.6 in all difference images studied, which allowed the identification of burning for 2011/09/04, 2011/08/18 and 2011/08/27. The Tukey test found no significant differences between indexes available, both of which were effective in mapping areas of burned scars.
